Mexicana group suspends operations

1 de septiembre de 2010

Mexicana Airlines (Grupo Mexicana) has suspended its operations - along with those of affiliates MexicanaClick and MexicanaLink - with effect from 12 noon Saturday 28 de agosto de 2010 until further notice.

The company says it is taking this step because of lack of agreements to provide long-term viability as its fragile financial position has deteriorated further in recent weeks.

Customers booked on these airlines are requested to contact Mexicana, their travel agent or their ticketing airline for further information.

Mexicana can be reached at the following numbers:

  • In Mexico City - 5448-8634 or 5998-5998
  • From anywhere in Mexico - 01800-837-6150 or 01800-801-2010
  • From the USA or Canada - 1-888-882-9994 or 1-877-801-2010
  • In other countries please contact the local Mexicana office.

Mexicana says: "We will continue seeking out ways of securing the company's long-term financial viability, so our passengers can once again enjoy the quality services they are accustomed to.  We hope to be back in the air soon and would like to thank everyone involved in this process for their support and understanding."

Other oneworld airlines offer assistance to passengers

oneworld airlines serving Mexico internationally have taken steps to help passengers affected by Mexicana's decision to suspend operations.

American Airlines, Iberia and LAN are offering special fares to passengers holding tickets on cancelled flights by Mexicana or its affiliates MexicanaClick and MexicanaLink and relaxing the usual rules on changing reservations to or from Mexico.  In American's case, the changes also apply to its regional affiliate American Eagle.

British Airways and Iberia are also offering to rebook customers with a connecting sector on Mexicana onto alternative carriers for that connecting sector.

American has also boosted capacity to Mexico, with two additional daily flights between Dallas/Fort Worth and both Cancun and Mexico City and one extra daily between Mexico City and Miami.

American and its American Eagle affiliate serve 16 points in Mexico from multiple US gateways.   Iberia links Mexico City with Madrid.  LAN serves both Mexico City and Cancun from Lima and Santiago de Chile, while British Airways links Mexico City with London Heathrow.
